Story behind this food blog
I grew up in a small town in central Texas, 1 of 10 kids. It was the kind of little town and time where and when little kids could ride their bikes everywhere unsupervised. Our family, both sets of grandparents, three of our aunts, and an uncle lived on one large block. The rest of our extended family lived out in the country just out of town, in other parts of the state, or in Illinois.
The best times I remember from my childhood though were during the summer or on holidays. That’s when there were visits from our extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins. Those visits were filled with family, laughter, and food.
Family and food, the two are forever intertwined. Yeast rolls bring memories of hot summers, tamales bring images of my mom’s hands spreading masa on corn shucks, and corn on the cob brings memories of running through cornfields with my sisters and cousins.
My mom’s pickles and preserved peaches were some of the favorite snacks my younger sister and I shared with our cousin. Snow cones my dad made and homemade ice cream when our out-of-town relatives came by. These are the memories I hold close to my heart.

That is what this blog is about. Family, food, and laughter. It’s a way to share favorite recipes I’ve collected over the years with my family and with yours.
This blog, “Xtrayummy.com”, is named after a memory involving family, food, laughter, a loud restaurant, and a misheard order. My nephew and his wife were visiting, we were ordering our meal and I thought my niece asked the waiter to make her order “Extra Yummy.”
So here’s wishing you and your family lots of great memories, tons of laughter, and for the food – that it’s always “XtraYummy!”
